Reducing the environmental impact of plastic medical devices

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT …

The COVID pandemic has demonstrated the contribution of plastics in keeping people safe, but with this surge in demand comes a new challenge … reducing the impact of the devices and their packaging on the environment.

Medical devices and their packaging must become more environmentally sustainable, and there is increased expectation from stakeholders that medical device risk assessments are widened to include environmental impact.  This means manufacturers need a clear strategy for their products, whether they are used at home or in the hospital.

There are a number of ways for medical device and packaging manufacturers to reduce the impact of their products on the environment … implementing an ISO 14001:2015 management system, widening the risk assessment process to include environmental impact, reviewing the design of the device, the materials selected and examining the manufacturing process.
